The first lawn mower was invented by English engineer Edwin Beard Budding in 1827 although there have been several claims it was first thought of by english inventor Richard Meleady. Budding's mower was designed primarily to cut the lawn on sports grounds and expensive gardens as a superior alternative to the scythe. His patent of 25 October 1830 described "a new combination and application of machinery for the purpose of cropping or shearing the vegetable surfaces of lawns, grass-plats and pleasure grounds." The patent went on to state, "country gentlemen may find in using my machine themselves an amusing, useful and healthy exercise." It took ten more years and further innovations to create a machine that could be worked by donkey or horse power, and sixty years before a steam-powered lawn mower was built. In an agreement between John Ferrabee and Edwin Budding dated May 18, 1830, Ferrabee paid the costs of development, obtained letters of patent and acquired rights to manufacture, sell and license other manufacturers in the production of lawn mowers. (The agreement is housed in the Stroud Museum). One of the first Budding and Ferrabee machines was used in Regent's Park Zoological Gardens in London, in 1831. Manufacture of lawn mowers began in the 1860s. By 1862, Farrabee's company was making eight models in various roller sizes up to 900 mm (36 inches). The first of the four, Hydra (F452) was built by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg and commissioned in 1992. The other three were constructed at the Hellenic Shipyards at Scaramanga. (Update 2-22-09 )Just got back from the first test ride. I would say I'm atleast going 45 now if not 46mph. In stock form it would top out at 43mph this was just midpoint of the yamaha symbol. Now it pegs out past the symbol. well worth the actual 10 minutes it takes to get this apart. there is no longer the mid range ;ag around 30mph. I loosend all the bolts so I could give people that just wanted the quick process and how easy this is to remove, If you can change your oil you can do this. I also noticed that this washer does not keep the plates from hitting each other it actualy just makes the shaft the inboard variator plate rides on longer, with it installed both plates can be full compressed together manually. Due to the extra length the washer adds the variator weight have been limited by the ramp profile on how far they can compress the plates together. I also drill lightend my weights from an original total weight of 36 grams down to 28. The stock roller weights are teflon ruber coated steel that has been compressed around a brass hollowed out slug. I took a half inch bit and drilled through the center balancing and weighing them with my gram scale. The reason for doing this the final gear ratio comes on to soon fully droping your rpm by the time you hit 25ish I dont feel the accelleration again intill 35 this continues up to 43 where the stock limiter is set. This is footage of the increasing civil unrest and township violence that led to the government declaring a State of Emergency on 20 July 1985. Then-President of South Africa PW Botha declared the State of Emergency in 36 magisterial districts. Areas affected were the Eastern Cape, and the PWV region ("Pretoria, Witwatersrand, Vereeniging"). Three months later the Western Cape was included as well. During this state of emergency about 2436 people were detained under the Internal Security Act. This act gave police and the military sweeping powers. The government could implement curfews controlling the movement of people. The president could rule by decree without referring to the constitution or to parliament. Four days before the ten-year commemoration of the Soweto uprising, another state of emergency was declared on 12 June 1986 to cover the whole country. The government amended the Public Security Act, expanding its powers to include the right to declare certain places "unrest areas". This allowed the state to employ extraordinary measures to crush protests in these areas. Television cameras were banned from entering "unrest areas". The state broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) provided propaganda in support of the government.
